It was love at first sight between Gerald the Groundhog and me.
Something just clicked between us.
So I suffered through those long, cold winter months waiting for him to emerge from hibernation.
To return to me.
My prayers were answered, and Gerald emerged from the ground victorious over frost and snakes and foxes.
I welcomed him back with open arms.
Then.
Then I heard tell of a groundhog baby.
And one day I, myself, caught sight of Gerald’s baby, climbing up his side as I drove past.
Clearly not as open to a career in modeling as Gerald, the baby remained elusive.
No matter how many times I drove by, camera in tow, baby remained just out of sight.
Until one joyous day.
But wait, who’s that behind the tall grass?
A bird?
A plane?
An escaped convict looking for a place to hunker down and evade the coppers?
It would seem that Gerald is now the proud parent of twins.
Did you know groundhog childhood lasts 6 weeks?

A Bouncing Baby Groundhog… but wait, what’s that?

How exciting! They are so cute! Since there has not been a sighting of the other parent, I’m going to go out on a limb here with a theory: groundhogs do not reproduce sexually. When two groundhogs (or a groundhog and his very special human lady) are in love, the stork brings them a wee groundhog baby or two. Thus the other parent must be you. Congrats!
I simply cannot stand the cuteness!!! I love baby anythings.
By the way. No pity for you and your rainy graduation. We were sitting outside in Phoenix in May for 5 hours and it was over 100. Thank goodness she is in law school in Seattle – rain is probably a given for the next graduation.
Jake’s surgery was postponed – long story. He’s old but hanging in there. Thanks.
Twins – way to go, Gerald!
They are super cute. I love groundhogs.
I know you’ll think I’m crazy, but I had to tell you this. I had a dream the other night where you and Gerald bumped into me at the grocery store and you were all delighted to see me and I was surprised you recognized me and then you were like, “Screw the grocery store, let’s go find something tasty!” So we went on this wild adventure for some sandwich you were desperate for.
I know I’m crazy.
OMG BABIES! And I didn’t realize there were two!
Awwwwww, twinnies. SO cute!
Gerald is so good with his babies. He’s nearly, dare I say it?, maternal.
Those are some fantastic pictures. You’re so lucky to have capture them.
What cute little groundhogs! I’ve never seen one in real life before.
Look at you, wildlife photographer! But I think Gerald is actually Geraldine.
Not a lot of job security for the groundhog nannies, huh?
Guess I’ll stick with humans.
No matter how many times I see a deer, turkey, groundhog or any other wild creature…in the wild…I get all giddy and excited and insist upon pulling over and taking pictures.
Farm Boy just loves it…but not really.
CUTE BABIES!!

not one but TWO mounds of adorableness! YAY!
Please tell Gerald if he needs any help in the twins department, I’m his girl!
I’m in love. With a groundhog. 3 of them actually.
Wow! I must say that I am stunned by your blog. I absolutely LOVE all the quirkiness of it!
This post is so adorable and amazing. You’ve got some great pictures here. You also have a new follower.
Stopping by from SITS and staying around a while.
You, my friend, are HI-larious!
Those three are pretty funny, too. Cute babies.
I’m amazed at your knowledge of random animal facts. Just amazed. You should be a zookeeper. OR be on Jeopardy.
