Why I’ll Never be a Professional Crocheter

January 5, 2009

Today at the office I am spending my free time crocheting a scarf for Skye.

Don’t worry about ruining the surprise, I already gave it to her as a present, then changed my mind about the length and took it back. I’m a giver (and then taker).

Ten minutes ago, two women I work with (Jen and Melissa) came up to my desk and started asking me about what I was doing. The conversations went like this.

Jen: What are you working on?

Me: It’s just a scarf, a late Christmas present

(What I didn’t share is that it’s from last Christmas…I’m such a bad friend!)

Jen: Oh, that’s the afghan stitch!

Me: Yes!

(I have no idea if this is true, but she seemed to know her stuff, so I assume she is right.)

Jen: Wait, maybe not, how do you have the ridges go out like that?

(Assuming she was right was a mistake, apparently.)

Me: …I don’t actually know what I’m doing.

Jen: Do you have your pattern with you?

Me: …pattern?

Jen: Well, I’ll have to come by and watch you today!

Jen wandered off and Melissa started talking with me.

Melissa: Do you knit a lot?

Me: Well, not really, no. I’m much more of a crocheter.

Melissa: But that’s knitting, right?

Me: No…that’s a double ended crochet hook.

(I am not positive that’s what it is called, but am too embarrassed to say that.)

Melissa: Oh.

(It is clear she doesn’t completely believe me.)

(Now I might not be an expert, but obviously I would know whether I’m knitting or crocheting.)

(But after re-reading this post, I understand her skepticism.)

Me: Yep, crocheting.

Melissa: *awkwardly wanders away*

OH I LOVE THIS ONE, because I do crochet and love it. Not an expert by any means but I can get around with the best and worst of anyone hehe. I started doing hats this winter then little girls purses and then head bands with a fun crochet flower. So much fun to look at the end product….but…I love your post and how your double hook fooled everyone. Hey I have one of those, but forgot how I used it! LOL oh dear back to 101 double hook crocheting!

When I read the title my first thought was “Huh? Is Megan joining the TSA?” I get it now though!

Sorry, just a little slow.

Thanks for stopping by my blog and leaving a comment it got me to read your blog and I am hooked lol.
I just started crocheting and taught myself by reading a book and online videos. I am pretty sure if someone saw me crocheting the conversation would go something like yours above lol.
