And Then William Shatner Started Singing (A NYC Road Trip Story)

Shatner's World on Broadway NYC roadtrip

Trips to NYC are never complete without a Broadway show.

And Broadway shows are never as exciting as when they reference Star Trek.

(Unless they have glitter and/or dinosaur heads.)

(Nothing tops dinosaur heads.)

So when I saw tickets were on sale for William Shatner’s last performance of his one man show, Shatner’s World, a road trip was required.

Shatner's World on Broadway, New York City Roadtrip Naps

For once, my mom jumped on the NYC day trip bandwagon, allowing the rest of us to sleep on the way.

(We’re crazy fun to be around, obviously.)

(I’m sure her recent decision to never again take a day trip to New York was completely unrelated.)

(Also, how adorable does Lindsey look sleeping?)

(And how unfair is it that you can never say that without sounding creepy?)

(One of the many tragedies of modern life.)

(Along with the lack of soup restaurants on every corner.)

(All a gal wants is some soup, capitalism, why are you falling down on the job?)

Shatner's World on Broadway

Thanks to a terribly early starting time and a shocking lack of traffic, we arrived early enough to leisurely park and eat lunch and stand outside the theatre, taking photo after photo.

(Why, yes, that was quite inconvenient to all the people walking by, how sweet of you to think of them.)

Shatner's World on Broadway

Shatner’s World was sometimes funny and sometimes strange and sometimes a wee bit racist, but it was always Shatner-y.

And, really, that’s why everyone was there.

Well, that, and for the end, when William Shatner started singing.

‘Cause if you haven’t heard that in person, you haven’t truly lived.

In case you were wondering

I am wearing different socks in the first photo

But they’re rather similar

For me

Quite impressive,

My daughter always has mismatched socks. All the cool kids wear mismatched socks. You are cool and I am not!

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:54 pm

You can totally be cool too, just don’t organize your sock drawer, then randomly grab every morning.

  • Missy Jill (What's Going On Here!?) March 22, 2012, 9:46 am

On my wish list: living close enough to NYC to make a day trip. AND–cool socks.

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:53 pm

There are many downsides to “going Canadian,” as we call it in the Great Multicolored South.

  • spilledinkguy March 22, 2012, 9:48 am

I hope Shatner negotiated some sweet travel deals for everyone…
    because… you know…
set phasers to great low rates…
    something… like that.

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:53 pm

      You always make me laugh.

  • daisyfae March 22, 2012, 10:20 am

i am wrapping up 3 days/2 nights in NYC on business. i burned my two theater nights on “Other Desert Cities” (so i could drool over Justin Kirk and Stacey Keach) and “The Best Man” (so i could feel the power of James Earl Jones’ voice in my very bones).

kinda wish i could have snuck in the Shatner thing for a matinee. my life would be better for it…

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:53 pm

Oh my gosh, how were they?! I’ve heard great things about both, and really want to see The Best Man – if only ’cause I’m quite the Angela Lansbury fan!

      • alonewithcats March 22, 2012, 7:23 pm

I’m going to see “The Best Man” on Saturday. I am most excited about seeing and hearing Mrs. Potts in person. As usual, my priorities are as they should be.

        • Megan March 23, 2012, 9:55 am

I’m SO excited for you. ‘Cause Mrs. Potts is totally where it’s at.

  • Melonie March 22, 2012, 10:35 am

As someone whose spouse works in theatre, you are not pretentious. You’re classy. And awkward. You can be both, it’s okay.

Jealous of day trips to NYC, but if you ever take a day trip to the Twin Cities, I can totally be your guide. We’ve got the second largest theatre community behind NYC, so definitely worth the trip.

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:52 pm

Okay, I’m not really into hiding my stupidity, so I’ll admit I totally just Googled “Twin Cities” to see where, exactly, that referred to!

And you shouldn’t make me such offers, I’m notorious for actually taking people up on them!

      • Melonie March 23, 2012, 10:41 am

LOL. Living here has made me presumptuous. I assumed everyone knew where the Twin Cities were!

And I totally stand by my offer. And in addition to a tour and a show, I’ll even throw in a roller derby bout or two. Assuming you come when we have a bout. And shows. Summer is probably best to avoid. And winter can get dicey, so your best bet is autumn or spring. Although if you like fishing and camping, summer is the best time to come. 10,000 lakes and all that…

  • agnes March 22, 2012, 10:43 am

    Mismatched socks happen!
    Looks like a fun trip.

  • Andi March 22, 2012, 11:01 am

Great jacket! Looks like a fun trip. Alas, in the great state of Oklahoma we are not a day trip away from New York City…

But I have a herd of cows out my back door!

    Surely that balances something out…Right?

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:51 pm

Hey, I’m envious – you know of my deep, abiding cow love! And I don’t know, I feel like you could make it in a day if you really pushed for it!

  • Mark March 22, 2012, 11:30 am

ha! The joke’s on you! I have hear Shatner sing. He actually put out an album years ago and I laughed all the way through it. Now I need to Youtube him and see if I can find him performing. You got me all excited! Excited in the way a quirky girl can get a gay man.
Love that red coat!!! It sort of matches your socks from the first photo. Well, at least one of them. You should have totally wore it with the coat.
Thanks for making me laugh. You’re awesome!
I bet you’re an adorable sleeper too. Ew, you’re right, that does sound creepy!

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:50 pm

I am an adorable sleeper, thank you for noticing!

(Yeah, can’t escape the creepy. So sad.)

And everyone should see Shatner perform. And he’s put out three albums. I know, ’cause Lindsey owns all of them!

  • Mindee@ourfrontdoor March 22, 2012, 11:57 am

William Shatner. Narcissism at it’s finest.

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:47 pm

I know, right?! He’s really got the whole personality perfected. It’s quite impressive. You know, once you get passed hating him.

  • Sharon March 22, 2012, 12:18 pm

First of all, love your jacket! Secondly, totally jealous of you seeing this show – especially since I’m watching the original series right now on netflix!

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 1:33 pm

Oh my goodness, my mom and I are are also watching the original series on Netflix! Only she keeps going out of town and we’re both bad with actually doing stuff, so we’re only on like episode 5!

      • Skye March 22, 2012, 5:18 pm

For a second I was like, William Shatner has a series of one-man shows on Netflix?! (I admit, I was kind of excited.) Yeah, I’m slow.

        • Megan March 23, 2012, 10:00 am

          Man, that would be awesome!

  • John March 22, 2012, 12:18 pm

My boss during my first “real job” was a complete William Shatner fan. Seriously – I’d enter his office and he’d be listening to one of the countless William Shatner CD’s that have been released over the years. I wish I could say that I’m making this up.

The scene in that picture of the NYC skyline is a scene I know well, when I start getting super excited about the trip into the city. I swear, I can feel the bumps in the road looking at it.

    • Megan March 22, 2012, 12:49 pm

I was SO excited to get that photo! My friends hate driving in the city so I’m always the one driving at that point and every time I’m like, frick, need to get a photo of that! So it was quite the life goal accomplished moment.

  • Domesticated Gal March 22, 2012, 1:19 pm

I hardly even noticed the socks. They don’t stand out quite as much as the Little Man’s choice of one pure white sock, and one vibrantly striped blue & red sock with a monkey face on the heel today. Pulled up to his shins. With shorts. Fortunately for me, he doesn’t own sandals yet. Because THAT would have been tragic.

  • Vince March 22, 2012, 1:43 pm

Did you ring and let NYC know you were coming up :-D.

Is he that good on stage ?.

    • Classic NYer March 22, 2012, 2:12 pm

As a matter of fact, she did NOT let us know she was coming, else I would most definitely have changed my plans for the day. I might have, say, baked a cake, or rolled out a welcome mat. Or, you know, something.

      • Megan March 23, 2012, 10:04 am

Hey, don’t tempt me – I’ll totally make you bake me a cake the next time I come to town!

(I’ll accept a mat. Though not quite as good as a cake!)

    • Megan March 23, 2012, 10:04 am

No. No he isn’t. But he’s quite Shatner-y, so I felt I got what I wanted out of it!

  • Stephanie @ Our Marriage Adventure March 22, 2012, 1:57 pm

I’m really glad you answered the sock question because that was seriously bugging me. And Shatner singing is the bomb, but then again I’m a secret Trek fan. Shhhh, don’t tell!

    • Megan March 23, 2012, 10:02 am

      Don’t worry, so I am, you’re secret’s safe here!

  • Skye March 22, 2012, 5:33 pm

I’m SO happy I came with you guys on my first NYC day trip! 🙂
Also, why can’t I remember the racist part?! I’m racking my brain…

    • Megan March 23, 2012, 9:59 am

Hahaha, aw – it was the Jewish jokes. So, could be considered just bigoted, but I went with racism for ease of phrase. And I’m so glad you came too – now you know the joy and exhaustion inherent in the trip!

  • Kimberly March 22, 2012, 6:47 pm

Shatner being so old…I’d still hit it…would you expect anything less?
    Probably not.
    You’re adorable.
    That is all.

    • Megan March 23, 2012, 9:58 am

Well, of course – everyone would hit that!

(If only for the “beaming” joke that I’m sure no one can resist making. At least, none of the girls who are classy like me.)

  • nursemyra March 22, 2012, 7:22 pm

I’m torn between wanting your red coat or Skye’s white one. Maybe I need both, winter will be here soon

    • Megan March 23, 2012, 9:55 am

Haha, well, I bought my coat off modcloth.com, and I bought Skye that coat for her birthday last year from Old Navy!

  • Jon March 22, 2012, 9:31 pm

    William Shatner?

Oh well, at least you look dazzling in red!

  • Nami March 22, 2012, 9:42 pm

Shatner was on Broadway?! I can’t get behind that – unless, Henry Rollins was there, too.

  • ava March 23, 2012, 6:40 am

I miss my girls too. Lucky you Megan! 🙂

  • Shell March 23, 2012, 10:20 am

I have a crush on William Shatner. Well, Denny Crane. But the same thing, really.

  • The Constant Complainer March 23, 2012, 9:34 pm

Wow, sounds like so much fun! I’ve never been to NYC.

Hope this finds you enjoying your Friday night and weekend!

  • blackhuff March 26, 2012, 5:59 am

That jacket that Lyndsey have on in the photo, the white one, I have bought one exactly like that for me this past weekend for the Winter to come here in South Africa. (Now tell me this doesn’t sound creepy 😉 )

  • Karen Peterson March 26, 2012, 5:11 pm

I met William Shatner once. He is very aware of who he is.

I didn’t get to hear him sing, though. I’m a little bit jealous.
