Before Disney or Whoopi Goldberg or Johnny Depp, if you wanted to immerse yourself in Alice’s world you’d have to grab a book.

You know, when people read physical books and couldn’t call for help in a car and smoked to look like Lauren Bacall.

There are hundreds (probably thousands) of versions of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.

If you’re only going to read one, make sure it uses Tenniel’s illustrations.

If you’ve ever searched for “Alice in Wonderland” in Etsy, you know to which drawings I’m referring.

But I promise you – their popularity is warranted.

Tenniel’s original drawings were engraved on blocks of wood and created the visuals for Alice’s world.

The Cheshire Cat, the Queen of Hearts, the Caterpillar – all came to life in Tenniel’s hand.

(No, I didn’t just know they were done with woodcut, I looked it up on Wikipedia.)

(Everything on there’s always correct, right?)

And if you can pull yourself away from the drawings, the book itself is quite good too!

I’m a sucker for a novel with pictures,

A Serial Killer To Love

January 29, 2011

Darkly Dreaming Dexter

It's the blood spatter that draws you in.

Serial killers and birthday parties.

That doesn’t describe the book, just my day.

First I’m going to encourage you to read Darkly Dreaming Dexter by Jeff Lindsay.

Assuming you have a soft spot for serial killers who have no emotions but still choose to only kill other killers.

Or Barbie dolls.

Both play an important role in the novel.

Then I’m heading into D.C. for a friend’s birthday.

We’ll walk through the museums while making spectacles of ourselves and posing with equestrian statues.

Excited face optional.

I hope your Saturday is equally thrilling,

Megan

Autobiography of Santa Claus

December 25, 2010

Where was Santa born?

How’d he do in high school algebra?

When did he realize Mrs. Claus was The One?

Did he really get along with the reindeer?

Some of those questions are answered in the unique book The Autobiography of Santa Claus: As Told to Jeff Guinn. Starting with Santa’s birth in 280AD, this book deftly mixes novel with history in an ingenious fashion.

So if your family’s driving you crazy, or if you’re trapped inside due to snow (it’s a white Christmas!), grab this book and snuggle up.

If you’ve ever sat on the lap of a jolly man in a fuzzy red suit, this might answer some questions you’ve had.

Or if, like me, you have a fear of costumed characters and received annual phone calls from Mr. Claus.

(Or if you don’t celebrate Christmas or Santa and have always wondered what’s up with those elves.)

Merry, merry, merry Christmas

Or Saturday – depending,

Megan
