What, exactly, does a director do?

Honestly, I’m not sure.

I think it’s one of those jobs that has a big impact, but is not well recognized.  Well, maybe in the seem-like-an-important-person-at-a-party way.  But not in the, did-you-see-the-lastest-show-from-that-director? way.

At least, I’ve never been cultured enough to understand the important of a director, nor be able to see a specific director’s hand in a show.  But after seeing The Norman Conquests last year, I remembered that the director Matthew Warchus had also directed Boeing Boeing.

His hand in two of the funniest shows I’d ever seen did not seem to be coincidence.  And so I became a follower.  Not a very good one, as it’s taken over a year to finally see his newest Broadway show, God of Carnage, but a follower who believed.

My belief, as expected, was rewarded.  Two couples, brought together over an incident between their sons, slowly lose the facades they present to the world and show their true fears and feelings.  Surprisingly, it’s hilarious.
