Live From New York: It’s Saturday Night The History

I love a backstage story.

I mourn for the days when I would turn on VH1 to hear about the bitter infighting in the band Ratt.  I’ve never heard Ratt’s music – in fact, outside of their TV special I’ve never heard of Ratt. But back in high school, I multiple times spent an hour absorbing their story in lieu of homework.

There’s just something about having the scoop – knowing what really goes on behind the scenes.

It’s the reason I would buy Miley Cyrus’ autobiography but wouldn’t watch her movies.

(In English, that is. During my short time living in Morocco I was forced to watch Hannah Montana: The Movie six times in French. I’m not convinced it would be more sensible when understood.)

Basically, I am a voyeur of bands or shows or any group willing to expose itself to the public.

And that’s why I loved Live From New York: An Uncensored History of Saturday Night Live. I didn’t watch SNL during its first twenty years, but through the interviews and stories I gained an affection toward its varied casts.

If you enjoy peeking behind TV’s curtain, I think you’ll enjoy it too.

Either Steve Martin or Chevy Chase is kind of a jerk

But I can never remember which,

Megan

I am a total VH1 whore for realz! My husband always rolls his eyes at me when I’m still in my PJ’s at 5pm and I am glued to a marathon of behind the scenes. It’s so juicy! Glad I’m not the only one!

As the father of a ten year old girl, I was legally required to see the Hannah Montana movie. In English. With four pre-teen girls. At least I had a big buttery tub of popcorn. However, even in English, this movie was a cake walk compared to the Jonas Brothers Concert I attended a few months back. Brutal. I’m still paritally deaf from the screaming fans. Btw, I used to love those Behind the Scenes shows too.

I attended a Backstreet Boys concert a few months ago after being given free tickets (and partially out of respect for my middle school self) and was SO shocked at the rampant screaming. I mean, when did all groups start getting Beatles-style adoration?

But I am especially saddened it’s being bestowed upon the Jonas Brothers!

Given the nature of that show, I’d bet the behind the scenes stuff is quite interesting. I wish they’d make a VH-1 special of it. That show left us before it’s time. So many band left to examine!

Yes, I still mourn for VH1 specials – they truly were my late night companion.

I have to admit a terrible, shameful secret – I’ve never seen a Griswold movie.

So the revelation didn’t have such a terrible impact upon me.

I watched the real thing and I’m betting the book is awesome!
Should you find yourself with time to kill I highly recommend the episode hosted by Willie Nelson
entitled, “Great Moments in the History of White Trash”. We really identified with that one.

I can’t find it online, but if I ever wander across it I’ll definitely watch and think of you!

I have that book as well and I also love to know the origins of things and the history. I haven’t made it through half of it yet, due to it being so extensive, but what I have read I have enjoyed!

It’s certainly hefty, but totally worth it!

I feel like I was somewhat raised on classic SNL. It’s good stuff!

NOT STEVE MARTIN!
Seriously. I won’t read that book if there is a chance of bursting my Steve Martin bubble. What to do what to do…

From the feedback I’ve gotten, I believe it goes the other way.

And the book is truly worth it.

And if it goes the wrong way, well, you can always tell yourself they’re lying.

I’ve heard that they are both jerks. It’s a bummer.

Isn’t that such a bummer?

I hate finding out people I like are actually jerks.

It’s like reading someone’s diary and discovering they hate you.

Only less intense, as, you know, you haven’t actually met the famous people.
