Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial and the Creepy Photographer

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Collage

Last Saturday there was a hurricane approaching.

It seemed the perfect time to head into D.C. and check out the new Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial.

After all – there were finally available parking spots in the tourist lot.

And if that’s not worth risking a natural disaster, I don’t know what is.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

The Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial is gorgeous and new and tidal basin-adjacent.

But my favorite memories are the little things.

Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial

Like this adorable young girl inspecting the quote-inscribed wall.

Or finding a man with the same tattoo as Skye… in the same location.

Or the man with the professional camera who asked to take my photo.

Which seemed quite sketchy, but it felt mean to say no, so I acquiesced.

Not that the photo he took was of the above tableau.

I’m not sharing that one, because in it you can clearly see my bra.

That’s not creepy at all, right?

No?

Whew, I was worried for a second.

Then there were all the people with umbrellas.

They turned out to be the smart ones.

Were you shocked I wasn’t the creepy photographer?

It was quite a nice change,

Seeing as how that tattoo man was wearing a t-shirt, I’m going to guess HE approached Skye. (I’m missing the conversation that ensued.) Or was it Skye’s x-ray vision, yet again coming to the rescue?
Do you reveal to your subjects that you’re taking a picture FOR YOUR BLOG? (I’m missing that conversation too.)

I would love to see the new memorial! It looks fantastic, well except for that whole impending hurricane thing.

Way to go for not being the creepy photographer!

Impending hurricanes make for great photo lighting. I’m thinking you should always visit the sites in that circumstance.

Ya know what? You’re blog is so cute and funny. I’ve just read your last 4 entries and I have been highly entertained. Love…love the moving, kitchen, car, busting a dresser thing. Jeez-us I hate moving and I hate helping people move even more.

But the pics at the Memorial site speak for themselves. I loved it.

I’ve seen all the memorials in DC a bunch of times, but I haven’t been there in a couple of years to see this one. Thanks for sharing with the pictures. I’m looking forward to seeing it when we we go to DC sometime next year or 2013.

I was completely shocked that you weren’t the creepy photographer.

I have a creepy inner voice, or at least, I tend to think that my inner monologue is creepy, but I’ve never thought to go up to a pretty girl (bra showing or not) and say “hey, can I take your picture near this national monument?”

Now, I hear my inner monologue telling me to do just that, so it’s time for another bare-knuckled fight with myself.

Hi Megan, the little girl looks so cute there, nice pic btw, and the umbrella one is so colorful. Love it. Great post. :)

Isn’t life amazing! The irony of things can floor me sometimes :0) I love this post.

I really enjoyed this post…the photos were great…especially for someone who hasn’t had a chance to get to DC yet.

The memorial looks amazing! And yes, that photographer is a little creepy. Not so much that he wanted to take your picture, but because he couldn’t politely tell you that your bra was showing so you could fix it before he took the photo. THAT’S creepy. :) Thanks for coming by my blog today!

The weather and lighting were awesome. We have to go out right before storms way more often! Then maybe we can have a rainy city photoshoot…

You’re not a creepy photographer, Megan.
I’m sure if I was in one of your photos you’d tell me if my bra was showing, right?!
Oh hehehe! That one never gets old! Or… I guess it does. But give me a break. I’m frazzled. I’ve just been through a wardrobe malfunction. *sigh* I need some new material.

Usually, I get all snarky up in here…

But that sweet girl (not you, Bra Girl; the one touching the monument) and the beautiful red umbrella and those lovely quotes?

Well, yeah.
Love it. A lot.

(Next time, can we see your bra?)

The memorial looks great. I have never been to DC but if you can’t show your bra at our nation’s capital …where can you?

I love the way you blog. It’s beautiful and not too many words get in the way. These photos are gorgeous, esp the umbrella one and the one with the little girl. Thanks for the comment!

Maybe that guy with the tattoo is Skye’s soulmate? It’s kind of really cool that they had the same tattoo :-)

Love the pictures of the memorial, maybe I’ll get to DC someday & see it for myself :)

That is strange to find someone with the same tattoo.

Of course when a hurricane is headed toward DC it’s the perfect time to go exploring the city.

Crystal August 31, 2011

It’s amazing how friendly handsome strangers can be when they share the same tattoo as a lovely young lady. :) They’ll practically give you the shirt off their backs… or at least partially remove it to give said lady a good look at what’s underneath.

Bad weather and significant holidays are often the best times to visit such monuments. I once took my grandmother to a major exhibition at the national art gallery on Christmas Eve. It was practically deserted which was fantastic.

I have to say it looks awesome, America really does a good monument.

Since we’re such great fake bloggy friends, I feel we are close enough that I can tell you that I did think for a split second you were going to be the creepy photographer. But now I’m ashamed and fear our fake bloggy friendship may come to a screeching halt because of my insinuation.
PS: Guy with the matching tat as your friend looked hawt!

Looks like a beautiful memorial!

And that photographer just sounds a little bit sketchy. Only a little bit.

You went out during the hurricane? Oh well… so did I. And gray skies always seem to make for brighter pictures. Did you find out if that guy with the tattoo was a tourist or a local? Because he looks like he might be kinda cute… Um, yeah. I feel weird now.

But note to self, visit memorials when natural disasters are on the way… they make for less crowds. Thanks for that one! :)

Sandy September 1, 2011

i guess if you were going to visit that particular monument during a natural disaster, a hurrican is much better than an earthquake, don’t ya think? if dr. king were to fall over onto you…it might hurt a bit! (now i am picturing a picture of “someone” lying under a slab of granite with their sandaled feet sticking out…now that’s creepy!)

Jasmine September 2, 2011

i would love to see this memorial! it looks great in these pictures even with the hurricane conditions :)

The photo of the little redheaded girl is precious. And I’m not just saying that because she looks like me. OK, fine. I am saying that because she looks like me. I am *so* transparent.
