Master Class

DSC_0340Tyne Daly is a magnificent actress.

I missed her performances as a detective in Cagney and Lacey, her Tony-winning Mama Rose in Gypsy, and as a social worker on Judging Amy – but now I know the truth of her genius.

Tyne Daly currently embodies Maria Callas at the Kennedy Center in Terrence McNally’s Master Class.

Master Class is a play about opera.  The premise has Callas, on a downward spiral from being the world’s greatest opera singer, teaching an American class.  Three students join her on stage, where Callas tears them down and constantly interrupts as they incrementally improve.

Each student acts well, conveying anger, frustration, and pride in turn, and the accompanist adds splashes of humor throughout the show.

But the show is Maria Callas.

Callas fighting through the verbal attacks she’s suffered, recalling the many regrets of her marriage, and her painful relationship with Aristotle Onassis.

I left the theatre thirsting to learn more about Callas, yet due to Daly’s nuanced characterization, I feel I already knew her.

Should I experiment with opera?

Sure! Why not?

About the Mexican food: I’ve never been to Virginia, so I don’t know what ya’lls Mexican food is like. Down here, we do a lot more corn tortillas, baracho rather than refried beans–and our refried beans are cooked with lard, so they’re so creamy and tasty–they taste nothing like the ones at Taco Bell! We also do a lot of fish (because of the Catholics) and shrimp tacos, a lot of pork, and a lot of enchiladas and burritos. Enchiladas are typically cheese with chile con carne on top (spicy chili) or chicken with white cream sauce or a green pepper sauce. Everything down here is stuffed with jalepenos and chilies, and everything has chili on it–tacos, burgers, etc. Plus, carne asada (burned, crispy meat) and brisket tacos are big down here. And chorizo and barbacoa, which you don’t want to eat unless you’re seriously brave. Everyone eats breakfast tacos instead of pancakes, or tamales in the winter.

Does that help? It’s very Monterrey/ Classic Mexican cooking with a lot of Tex- Mex flavor. It’s extremely unique. Because San Antonio Mexican food is different than West Texas Mexican food (more NEw Mexico influence–blue corn tortillas, lots more corn and squash, more beef and beans, less chicken, no fish, lots of stuffed peppers) and border food (the greasier, the better, all corn, more pork and goat, more fresh white cheese, no cheddar.) There’s a little bit of Californian Mexican influence here, but the majority is either Tex-Mex or classic “poverty” interior Mexican cooking.

I love Tyne Daly — I watched “Judging Amy” years ago and just fell in love with her performance.

I say go for it with an opera experiment… after all… what’s the worst that could happen?!? :)

Blessings!

Opera could be fun, and you get to wear some really cool costumes????

Tyne Daly made an awesome Callas. The show made me realize that while I’ve listened to her for awhile, I don’t actually know anything about her life. Now I wanna know more!
