Even before she twisted her hair into buns, Carrie Fisher lived Hollywood. After all, her parents were Debbie Reynolds and Eddie Fisher. Her father publicly left her mother for Elizabeth Taylor. It must have been all the more painful given the national scrutiny that followed.
That’s only one of the crazed events in her life that Fisher talks about in her one woman show, Wishful Drinking. Her show also involves blackboards, life-sized adult-themed dolls, wigs, and glitter. Lots of glitter. Tons of glitter. Her show, in all senses, shines.
I was only marginally aware of Carrie Fisher, having seen Star Wars and vaguely heard about her show. Now, I consider myself a fan. She takes the most painful events of her life and puts them on display to invoke laughter.
That’s the kind of woman I want to see on a stage.
Wishful Drinking
